Osteoarthritis, What should you know? What is Osteoporosis? Its a lost of mineral content of the bones (calsium salts). It commonly affect slim, Older Caucasian females and is generally post menoposal. Bones can tend to fracture easily with osteoporosis, specially in the mind and lower spine region. What causes Osteoporosis? Bones can become osteoporotic due to a diet lacking in calcium, or in situation that has been prolonged inactivity. People taking steroids for any lenght of time are increased risk of osteoporosis, as are menoposal women. Is Osteoarthritis is wear and tear diease? No. It is a degeneration/deterioration of the articular cartilage of the joint that can prevent proper function. Theres no reason why a person who has led a very sedentary lifestyle develops severe osteoarthritis of the knees and someone like a marathon runner, for example may not develop it or only in mild form. Does diet have any role in the treatment of osteoporosis? Since osteoporosis is preventable disease, maintaining a diet high in calcium would seem a good idea, specially as one approaches menopause. Foods high in calcium - skin milk, yogurt, cottage cheese, spinach, oysters, almonds, tofu, baked beans, brocolli, sardines, salmon, oranges - should be included in your diet as much as possible. |
